Meet the Governors

Our Governing Body

Joe Turner, proud Headteacher of The Milford Academy. I have worked at Milford for nearly 5 years now, with the first 2 and a half as Deputy Headteacher. I have a range of experience working in different primary schools across the country but I absolutely love working in Clifton and supporting our community.

I believe that a good education should not be a lottery based on where you are born and we strive to ensure every child at Milford gets that opportunity. Our vision is to ensure that Milford becomes the school of choice for parents and teachers, and become a school that the whole community can be proud of.

Dave Dickinson and I have worked in education for over 36 years as a teacher, educational psychologist, senior executive and government adviser. I have a strong commitment to improving the learning and life outcomes of children and young people, working with schools to help them to improve and refine approaches to teaching and learning.

Away from work, I have a wide range of active interests; cycling, running and hill walking that keep me fit. I have my own grownup children and now grandchildren to keep me on my toes!

James Strawbridge I am currently Vice-Chair of the Governing Body. I am a long serving member of the Governing Body, originally appointed before the city gained unitary status.

My skills and interests include a sound grasp of employment law, the ability to analyse data and a continuing interest in education policy, with regular attendance at governor's conferences.

My outside interests include cycling.

Augusta Steele (Gus) I joined the University of Nottingham in August 2021 as a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education. I supervise MA students and teach on primary teacher education courses. I have worked in Higher Education since 2007. In Higher Education, I was a primary school teacher in Nottingham City. I have been a class teacher for children from Nursery to Year 5 and became an Advanced Skills Teacher in 2003 for creativity. I have  worked on a 2-year secondment with the Arts Council of England, exploring the impact of Creative Partnerships in schools

I have also been the Deputy head of the British School of Milan for the last 6 years.

I enjoy collecting children's picture books, and have a love for things vintage.

Terry Smith, I have worked for Nottingham City for thirty-seven years, the past seventeen as Headteacher at Greenfields Community School in the Meadows area of the city. I was delighted to join The Milford Academy as a Co-opted Governor in 2021 and look forward to supporting Milford in its aim of becoming a fantastic school for the children and families of Clifton. As a headteacher of a school which is proud, as Milford is, to be part of the Nottingham Schools Trust, I share the school’s central aims of providing the best possible education for its community through further developing the school’s core values of supporting the children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. I look forward to working with the Headteacher, staff, parents and Governors in building on Milford’s existing good practice.
