Science

Our Philosophy

At Milford we believe that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world around us. Science has changed our lives and it is vital to the world’s future prosperity and sustainability and we teach and encourage children to understand their moral obligation now and throughout their life. Through building up a body of key knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world they live in. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse their results.

Science plays a crucial role in our understanding of the world around us Our Geography topics link to our Science topics, so children can understand that what we learn in the classroom helps us understand our own environments as well as those around the globe. Our science teaching helps us to prepare children for life, through experiences and exploration of the world in which they live. Children discover, explain and develop skills of enquiry through working scientifically.

Aims for Science at Milford

At The Milford Academy, we believe the purpose of Science education is to:

  • develop a questioning and reflective mind by providing a range of exciting and enjoyable activities. (see rolling programme)
  • develop a systematic and logical way of working.
  • apply their skills and knowledge to investigative work.
  • come to a deepening understanding of scientific concepts.

Teaching and Learning

All children will be taught the age related National Curriculum statutory objectives through high quality planning and teaching. This planning, as set out in our rolling programme, will ensure that the science objectives has strong links to our topic work, or a season of the year (e.g. plant in spring). This will allow children to make crucial links between their learning as well as making the learning more memorable for the children. Our planning will ensure children are able to build on their knowledge year-on-year.

Throughout the year children will conduct investigations. These will be designed to ensure children are predicting, testing and answering questions they have asked. These investigations, along with the standard science lessons, will support children to work scientifically.
