Helping at home
Here at The Milford Academy, we use a range of techniques to help support your child in maths. One crucial aspect of this is understanding number. At home, it is crucial for children to talk and engage with number as much as possible. This may be through number talk during cooking time (e.g. can you pass me 2 peppers please?) or taking part in some discussion at the dinner table (e.g. We’re having pizza tonight! If we cut it into 8 slices and there are 4 of us, how many slices should each person get?) This can be less formal for the children but still a great way to engage in mathematics.
Times tables
Our aim is that all children, by the end of Year 4, develop fluency and accuracy in all their times tables to 12. This can support their later learning when times tables is necessary and does not become a barrier to their learning, for example in fractions and perimeter.
Children begin learning their times tables in Year 2 and are taughtin the following order:
1 x tables
2 x tables
5 x tables
10 x tables
3 x tables
4 x tables
8 x tables
6 x tables
9 x tables
7 x tables
11 x tables
12 x tables
One weekly times tables test is carried out and recorded in a times tables book each week.
Every pupil in KS2 will have a TTRS log in where they can securely access the app from a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. By engaging with the games on TTRS, pupils will increase their ability to quickly recall number facts and improve their accuracy. You can access this app by clicking on the link here: Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com). If you would like to find out more about how TTRS works and the differences between each game, then please see the supporting documents below.
